Painting Each Room a Different Color?

I am in the process of painting the interior of my house. I have chosen a lovely yellow for the hallway, and had originally planned to paint the living room and kitchen the same color. I am now rethinking this plan.

My second choice would be to paint the living room the same yellow and the kitchen a shade of blue gray. Alternatively, I might paint the living room a paler shade of yellow and the kitchen a pale blue gray. It is hard for you to visualize, I guess, not having the actual colors to hand, but I would like some advice.

I like different rooms to be different colors, but I am reading and hearing (from my daughter who "studied design," and "knows" about these things) that this is not such a great idea. Although the house is not open plan, the rooms are each visible from each other, so the colors have to complement at least. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
