My 18hp '05 MTD riding mower has so much compression that the starter will not turn over the engine. It has ohv's. Could I put a larger cranking amp battery in it?

I would use a battery that the manufacturer calls for. Putting in a battery with too many amps could burn out some critical electrical componets. A small engine store that sells riding mowers or a battery distributor should be able to help you with the correctsize battery.
Probably not your battery, but your solenoid is bad. A larger battery won't hurt anything.
