Repairing Water Damage to a Wood Table Top?

I laid a woolen jumper flat on a double folded towel on my dining table. To my dismay this morning I found it had left a huge wet area and the varnish has lifted and feels abrasive and there are white water marks. Could anyone advise how I can repair this?

If the furniture peeled, it's veneer, not solid wood. You can still fix with wood resin. It comes in various colors. You have to sand the surface first. Complete instructions are here: homeguides.sfgate.com/fix-wood-table-peeling-waterdamaged...

Also try mayonnaise. A lot of people who have had similar issues have had success with it.

What you try with your table top should be given a lot of thought as we do not know the value of your table and some "solutions" may make it difficult for it to be refinished by a professional.

  • Staying damp for that period of time means the dampness went through the veneer and loosened the glue so it is possible you will have a difficult time simple working on just that area.
  • I think you should leave it alone for a few days and decide if it is worth asking a professional for an estimate or if you want to try some of the suggestions.
  • You may be able to squash a veneer blister simply by placing a damp cloth over it, and then holding a hot iron on the cloth for a minute or so until the cloth starts getting dry. The heat and moisture sometimes reactivate the glue. It may be necessary, however, to do this several times.
  • Here are a couple of sites that have good instructions on removing bubbles and also water marks.
