Repairing a Cut in Faux Leather Couch Upholstery?

Repairing a Cut in Faux Leather Couch Upholstery - cut near side seamI have a fake leather (LU) lounge which has a knife cut. It is in a non-stressed part of the fabric. However it's on a corner. Can I join the edges back up with super glue or will this have a corrosive effect.

Many thanks.

I do alterations and repair & sometimes it's on faux leather or vinyl. There is a product that is made especially for this sort of application & I've found it works very well. It's called Liquid Vinyl, and comes in a 2 oz metal tube. I just put a bead of this Liquid Vinyl down the edge of the tear, pull it together, smooth out the seam, and then put a strip of scotch tape over a section to hold it closed until it dries. After it's dry just pull the tape off.

I would try the superglue and get a matching paint to cover up any white that may show through.

I believe this is going to be a difficult repair because if you just use a glue - what will the glue be "sticking" to?

  • From your photos it appears if you try to use just glue then your glue will be attached to the vinyl and "stuffing"? Will there be anything for the glue to hold on to? It looks like there would still be a "gap" where the glue & vinyl will just "pull" the stuffing away from the frame??

  • It also seems like the vinyl is sewed down each side of the cut so there does not appear to be room to place any sturdy material under the cut to have something to attach each side of the cut area to (as so many repairs are done).
  • You may have better luck attaching a strip of vinyl repair material on the outside. If you do this you may have to have help pulling the cut together while the tape is applied (someone (2 maybe) may have to hold it a few minutes as this is a long cut.
  • I would suggest you go to an automotive store, take photos with you and ask for help with their vinyl auto repair products. They should have the best products and vinyl in autos is the same vinyl as in home products.
