Repairing the Mattress Support for a Hide a Bed?

The wire "springs" on my hide a bed re worn out and it sleeps like a hammock making it a back breaker. Can we replace or repair? We need this for visitors. The couch itself is in great shape so, what next?

The cheapest solution is to put a sheet of plywood under the mattress

Another alternative is an air mattress. They sell inexpensive air mattresses at Walmart starting at $8. www.walmart.com/.../20449351 A queen for $15.

There are lots of YouTube videos on this topic. Maybe one of them can help.

Suggestion to use plywood would be a quick immediate "fix" that is if you have the plywood or if you have a way to get it home after purchase.

I usually have a couple of air mattresses just in case they are needed so that might work for your visitors.

  • The U-Tube video might be good but it was too dark for me to see what was actually going on so maybe your screen is better as it looks like it might be the way to do it.
  • I would suggest removing one of the springs and take it to either Home Depot or Lowe's or maybe Ace or True Value Hardware store and see if they have a match (even an auto parts store might have them). Explain to the clerk what you are doing with these springs and they might have suggestions.
  • If that is the problem then you should be able to replace all of the springs and fasten the metal bars just as they are now.
  • You may want to spray everything (protect your carpet/floors) with a silicone spray while you are doing your repairs/clean-up.
