I am planning on putting down black plastic ground cover fabric around my house with red mulch. Do I have to remove the existing grass first?

No, you do not have to remove grass,the plastic will kill it, good luck.
Hello Cheri, No, you do not need to remove the grass first. That would be wasted effort on your part and I'm positive you could find more enjoyable ways to spend your time in the garden ;).
