Roof Repair Assistance for Seniors?

Are there funds to help me get a new roof. I am 70 year old on a fixed income with no roof insurance. I have lost shingles, may be 25 or more. My only coverage I have is Choice Home Warranty. They will not help me because I need a new roof. I need help.

I would go to this website for roof repairs or replacement for sentiors. They have all kinds of grants to help out. Here is the link - www.homeadvancement.com/.../grants.

You can also try HUD in your area to see if they can offer you some help.

You can try HUD.org or Habitat for Humanity.

Without knowing where you are, I can only offer general guidance.

So, when you say Choice Home Warranty, are you talking something you bought from the Realtor when you bought your home?

Did you buy just a basic program, because there is an extended coverage under this company that was designed to fix roofs, not replace but fix. I would think a fix would at least help to some extent--at least enough to get you through the winter until you can either save money or find other places to help.

If you purchased this was part of the deal with the Realtor, talk to that person and get his/her insights on what you are eligible for and how you can take advantage of what you purchased.

If you have just the basic program, then it would not cover this.

If it is established that you just have a basic Choice product, my suggestion would be to contact your local county area on aging and see if they can hook you up with resources that may help you...either with free or low cost repairs.

Every community is different so you may have resources out there if you ask and apply and qualify.

If they are not helpful, call your local community leaders and see what they can offer in terms of guidance.

Sending up prayers for solutions!

I'm also curious about your Choice Home Warranty policy as to whether it was through a realtor or a personal contract.
These policies usually cover home appliances and only cover a few home repairs. You do not say if your policy states 'roof leaks' or how long you have had your policy but be sure of what you have in your policy.

Covering roof leaks would mean a more expensive policy and these policies are annual renewal so you may wish to think about using that annual cost to making repairs to your roof.
There are numerous law suits against this type of warranty and the BBB receives complaints in many cities but yours may be one of the better companies. I'm just wondering if an inspection was made and how long this policy has been in effect.
If your policy covers 'roof leaks' it may have specific wording that would rule out any true repairs. But if it looks suspicious then try to have a legal person review it for you.

I'm mentioning this as a new roof is a very expensive undertaking and will not be approved without thorough investigation and unless it is an emergency will take months to check everything from your finances/income to the condition of the house.

Then the agency will determine if they have budget resources for this type of service/repairs and, if approved, you may be put on a waiting list that actually could take a year or more to reach your case.
I have helped people file with this type of repair and it can get very frustrating when having to file so many forms and then wait and wait.
Sometimes things can go quickly but that is the exception and not the rule.
If an agency feels it may be a hazardous situation or health threatening then they may just say you need to move to better housing.

You should check out Google with Free roof repairs low income senior and your zip code.
Several agency sites will come up and you should check those out first.
Each agency will have a qualifying form to complete before actually reaching their agency so that will be a beginning.

You probably should apply to several places and maybe at least one will be able to help you. Most likely Habitat for Humanity will be one agency and that is a good start because they do not have all the long wait that other government agencies have. They will give you an answer in a few days.

Contact your local community action agency and ask for assistance. They are granted funds to help those with limited income and seniors with projects like yours. Check with local churches who are usually able to help, or local agencies like Brothers Keepers who do free community work for residents.
