Silverware Dragonfly

The completed Silverware Dragonfly Using old silverware to create an outdoor sculpture adds interest to my collection of backyard sculptures. Some of this old silverware was what I used in my childhood my parents had given to me. I wasn't sure how I could use these "keepsake" knives and then came across this idea.

You don't have to own a welder to do this project!

Supplies:

two forks
six knives
JB weld glue
grinder
a pair of pliers
a small clamp
small beads for eyes and tail
paint, optional
paintbrush, optional
varnish, optional

Steps:

First, cut four knives in half for the wings of the dragonfly using a grinder. Cut a top off another knife for the upper body of the dragonfly. (I wanted to use the more decorative knife handle for this). The other decorative knife is to be used for the underside of the dragonfly body and the tail.

First, bend the end of the uncut decorative knife to form the tail. Then, glue the "wings" onto the top portion of the uncut decorative knife using the JB weld glue. Let dry. Glue the cut decorative knife portion to the top of the wings to cover up the raw ends. Let dry.

Next, to form the legs, cut the ends off of a pair of forks, leaving only the base and the prong portion of the fork. Using two pairs of pliers, bend the prongs of the two forks to form the dragonfly legs. Glue and clamp these two pieces together and let dry. Then, glue them to the underneath side of the dragonfly.

To add eyes to the dragonfly, as well as decorating the tail, I used some round beads and glued them onto the dragonfly. Let dry.

Paint the wings of the dragonfly and varnish to weatherproof.
