My Singer sewing machine, model 457, has been idle for quite a few years. This weekend I wanted to hem some pants, but the needle does not move (up and down) when the motor is engaged, nor when I manually rotate the wheel. I removed the top plate and noticed that the horizontal shaft does not rotate when the wheel/motor is engaged. Any ideas what may be the issue?

Oil the machine as per instructions in the manual. Download the manual online if you dont have it.
There are a bunch of videos on YouTube that may help you get it unlocked.

This is one of them. If this one doesn't help, put troubleshooting singer in the YouTube search engine until you find one that helps.
I have found these helpful to fix things in my house, like my vacuum and resetting my car clock.
