Sweetened condensed milk cannot be substituted for whole milk. Condensed milk is milk that has been reduced and to which a great deal of sugar has been added. You can, however, substitute evaporated milk for whole milk. Just add the same amount of water as you have evaporated milk; example, 1 cup milk and 1 cup water. Hope this helps.

Stuck in the house due to snow and want to make tapioca pudding using up Eagle Brand condensed milk. Can't believe this is not possible! So will skip adding any sugar, add a cup of water to EB, an egg, bring to a boil, add vanilla, cool and enjoy whatever I get.

Actually, I did successfully substitute sweetened condensed milk for whole milk. I wanted to bake a chocolate meringue pie and realized I only had 1 cup of milk. I checked my pantry and no evaporated milk either! I looked online for a recipe for condensed milk. I then diluted the canned, condensed milk and, working backward, deducted the amount of sugar that was called for in the recipe for condensed milk in the recipe for my chocolate filling. Wow. I just tasted it and the filling is perfect! It took some arithmetic calculation, however.

Condensed milk can be substituted for whole milk in recipes:
1 cup whole milk = 1/2 cup condensed milk + 1/2 cup water
As condensed milk is already sweetened, reduce the sugar in your recipe by 6 teaspoons for each change.

You may have sweetened condensed milk mixed up with canned, evaporated milk. You can substitute half evaporated milk with equal amount of water in place of whole milk.

(One cup whole milk equals 1/2 cup evaporated milk plus 1/2 cup water.)
