Swedish Rye Bread

This is a great homemade rye bread recipe with a very rich flavor!


  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 Tbsp. shortening
  • Advertisement

  • 1/2 Tbsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 4 cups flour (white)
  • 2 cups flour (rye)


Mix ingredients and knead until it quits being sticky. Put in greased bowl. Punch down when it doubles in size. Let rise again and knead once more. Make into 2 loaves. Let rise and bake at 375 degrees F for 45 minutes or until brown on top.

Servings: 2 loaves
Prep Time: 20 Minutes
Cooking Time: 45 Minutes

Hahaha! Wow, well did you grease your pan first? Always a must in baking except when making an Angel Food. That's just about the only time you wouldn't grease a baking pan! But as for the doneness of it, yes this one is tricky because its hard to tell. The top looks done and the centers not always. 45 minutes sounds right, and I'm sure it was fabulous, but next time if you think it was a bit moist let it go another 10 minutes.


I like to look for the slight puff of the whole thing, hard to explain, but it sort of starts to souffle up a little bit, this tells me the eggs are definitely done! Thanks for watching Crumb Boss TV!
