Terrarium in a Five-Gallon Jug

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 221 Posts

The completed five gallon terrarium. So this has been sitting around in our garage for a few months! My husband thought it was cool so he bought it at a garage sale for $1. He loved the idea I came up with of using it for a terrarium. We aren't too good at taking care of houseplants, so a terrarium that needs little attention is our way to go.

Supplies:

Bags of decorative rocks in bags.

Moss for the top of the terrarium.

A collection of succulents on a paper towel.

Steps:

  1. Thoroughly clean and allow to dry a large jar or jug. Place pebbles, 2" deep, in bottom of jug. Don't drop them in or the glass might break. I laid the jug on its side and put a few of the pebbles into the jar at a time and then turned it upright. Add a layer of the moss. Using a funnel, add the cactus potting soil. You now have three layers. Use a dowel to evenly distribute the soil over the bottom of the jar.
  2. Gravel placed inside a five gallon jug.

  3. Next, drop the decorative pebbles, rock, stone, or other decor where you want them in the jar. You can use a long dowel to move them into place.

  5. To plant the succulents, using the dowel, make a hole in the soil. Drop the succculent into the soil and use the dowel to carefully push the succulent into the hole.
  6. Using a stick to place the plants.

  7. To water, fill up a spray bottle and spray the inside of the jar. Needs to be watered about once every week or two.
