Troubleshooting Electrical Circuit Problems?

I have one light switch and one outlet that are not working. The other outlet on the circuit is working just fine. I have checked for loose wires and have reset the circuit breaker. I have been trying to fix it for three hours. Any help would be great.

Is it possible they are wired to a different breaker or fuse that has tripped and just needs reset? My house is very old and we have a lot of that kind of wonkiness.

If that is not the case, it maybe time to call an expert. I do not mess with electricity--too many DIY projects gone wrong.

Sometimes the outlets themselves have to be replaced.
