We can't get Dawn in Australia. I have Fairy and would like to try it on my dog to rid him of fleas?

Yes, the same company makes Dawn and Fairy. If you live in the US you buy Dawn and if you live in Europe you buy Fairy.
This brand Fairy- is produced by Procter & Gamble, the same as Dawn , in West Thurrock factory in England. They advertise that this product is mild enough for face and hands, green in color and slightly milder than Dawn!
ThriftyFun recently had a similar question about buying Dawn in Europe and we answered that Dawn & Fairy are made by Proctor and Gamble but may not have exactly the same ingredients.
Here are comments from sites about using Dawn or Fairy:
"Dawn or Fairy Dishwashing Liquid: Regular Dawn or Fairy dishwashing liquid is great for bathing your flea infested dog, it's less harmful than specialized flea shampoos as it doesn't contain any chemicals or insecticides."
It may be difficult to keep the soap on your dog for the usual recommended 5 minutes but it does take about this long to really kill very many fleas.
You can also use a fine tooth flea comb to remove fleas - dunk the flea comb in hot water to trap/kill any still living creatures.
Remember to try and kill any fleas living in your house or they will be right back on your dog.
Fleas can be drowned if you hold your dog down in a bath. Use a cup to ladle water over the head. The fleas will return, of course, unless you have some repellent protection, even a collar.
