There is probably either an adjustment not set correctly or a screw that needs adjusting or replacing.

If you cannot figure out what steps to take to solve your problem you can call any Singer sewing center (Google - with your zip or not) and explain what is happening and they may be able to walk you through it. Most of these employees are very nice and do often help with simple problems.
You can also email or call Singer support center and they may have a video that can help you.

Sometimes there are people at one of the craft stores that is familiar with these machines and may be able to help you or guide you to someone that can help.
