Identifying Flying Insects

March 10, 2014

I read all the forums I could trying to find the solution to get rid of these insects. Some helped but did not get rid of them. All the sprays and insect killers did nothing but cost a lot of money trying.

For some odd reason I thought of the bottle of spray Hydrogen Peroxide I had and thought insects are loaded with bacteria. I started to spray Hydrogen Peroxide like I would bug spray. The sprayer on the bottle is like a mist. I would even spray mist in the air and let fall on me. Instantly, they started leaving me alone. I bought a quart bottle and refilled my spray mister and started spraying all my furniture.

In a week, I was 95% free. I was being eaten alive by these insects until now. I had these insects since July 2013. I finally have relief and I wanted to share.

The screen on my window is bent, and today I noticed at that there are tons of small brown flying bugs that got through the gap. They don't seem to bite and are attracted to light. They are completely ignoring the vinegar.

This mix has helped us for most types of food moths and flies:
Heat a cup of water to warm, nothing hot.
Stir a tablespoon of honey into the water.

Pour the mix into an empty bottle or jar, juice bottles, etc., something that is wider on the bottom and small on top.
Set the mix out and leave for a few days. The buggers will fly in but rarely fly out!
Good Luck - my husband is an entomologist and uses this recipe!

We are infested by tiny flea-like flies. I discovered lots of what looked like brown rice on a shelf in my cupboard, have also found these in pans and dishes around the kitchen, but on closer investigation found these to be a type of shell the flies broke free from. They are quite easy to catch and kill, but are very annoying when they fly around your face. What can they be?

These little flies are likely a type of pantry moth that eats any type of grain-wheat, corn, millet, etc. My husband, an entomologist, says you probably have a moth infestation and need a rather radical cleanout. These moths probably entered your home via flour, corn meal, etc., you purchased at a store.

You write that these bugs do fly, but I don't see wings on the photo. I guess that wings are discarded. I think you have termites.

Apply termite-killing products to your home's exterior.
Vinegar diluted in water or vinegar mixed with lemon juice kills termites.

I have tiny hard shelled black/brown flying bugs in my house. They're not just in my kitchen, they're random throughout the house. Mostly they're on a wall or ceiling, and sometimes, they just fall. I've checked the pantries, but they're not in there. I've looked online for comparison, but I can't find anything that looks the same close up.

Most pics of the bugs have legs or wings, but when I go to smash them, they turn into a little ball and there aren't any legs or wings. I smashed one and you can see a bit of the wing. I don't see a cluster or group of them anywhere, just randomly, mostly alone. Now they're in my bedroom, falling from the ceiling onto my bed!

They are springtails. Use a regular insecticide. They love fabric, so vacuum your curtains and bedding often.

I have some brown long skinny flying bugs in my house. They look like fireflies with a bit of orange on their back or wings. I am just starting to see them around this week. I would like to know what they are and how to get rid of them.

There are slews of bugs so without more information it will be difficult to pin point even one bug as a "maybe".

Where do you live? USA or? US state or Canada?

Can you give a better size or do you mean they are the size of a firefly?
Where - what part of the house are you finding these bugs?
Do they turn up in the kitchen - for food, water, paper?
Are you seeing them at night or in the morning - or both?

Sorry to mention all of this but bugs do not always live in the same areas of the world and they differ in what they are "after".

If you can catch one (dead or alive but not smashed) you can probably take it your local agriculture office or even a local exterminator for assistance with what they are and maybe how to get rid of them. Even a good photo would probably work.

Here are a couple of sites with common bugs that you may be able to see your bug:

wow, that almost sounds like flying termites. Are the bugs' wingspan longer than the body?

I know because we had a huge collection of wood at one point in the yard and I'd see the suckers everywhere.

could also be flying ants, though thehome.one/.../

What is this tiny light green bug that has wings and jumps fast? They jump on me when I'm in my house or out on the porch. What is their purpose?

Put the bug in a sealed plastic bag. Bring the bug to a place that sells pesticides and they can help you.

Can you upload a photo or give more of a description?

For now I suppose you could do a backwards search like this:

www.google.com/search?q=TINY+LIGHT+GREEN+BUG+wings...:

And pick which one it is in the lineup :)

There are many bugs that fit that description but you do not say they bite, so that is a good thing.
Do you think they are coming from the outside into your house or are they living in your house and following you outside? Outside may be from plants but inside could be from many sources in your home.
You might try putting your zip code in Google with your question and get some answers as others in your area may be having the same problem.
You can also call your county extension service and ask about this as they should be familiar with any type of bugs in your area. (they may want you to send them a photo.)

We started noticing these showing up everywhere in our home about two weeks ago, but we have no idea what they are. They're very attracted to liquids. I can't leave a drink unattended for 5 minutes before they get into it.

They don't bite or anything. They are just very annoying. Every time we kill one we spot two more! Help?

You can go to any home center and bring in a dead bug in a plastic bag. Don't crush the bug.

I am no expert in this area but I have a friend who has drain flies coming out every time it gets warm. We live in Florida so that pretty much sums that up. However, take one of the dead ones and bring it to a plumber or have a plumber come to you.

I love working with plants and have found that mysterious bugs often arrive with soil or plants.
This looks like a Fungus Gnat to me but many bugs are similar and I would recommend that you Google your local Cooperative Extension office with your city or zip code and ask for their help.

Here is some information on Fungus Gnat:

Adult fungus gnats primarily are a nuisance. They can enter buildings as flying adults and develop indoors through all life stages. They do not bite people or animals and, in the United States, are not known to carry human pathogens. Adults feed very little, consuming only liquids, such as water or flower nectar.

Here is a site with a small photo so maybe you can rule this one out:

I hope these are fungus gnats as I have been able to control these with little effort. Fortunately, mine were only in my hot house.

It seems these little pests can come in with bags, especially with potatoes, but fortunately they can be easily killed. I have even used the fly trap paper roll that is sold at Walmart and other stores to get rid of them.

I moved into my home almost 3 weeks ago. We started noticing these bugs right away. They don't bite. They're only active at night time. They're attracted to light, and they come out in masses like 20-30 a night, all around 9:30-11pm.

It's driving me insane. They're in my kitchen; which I might add is very clean. What are they and how do I get rid of them? Help!

They sound like a bug called, in Alaska anyway, "no see ums". Here is a link on the photos and if you find them on the site, click on the photo and it will tell you how to control them. Good luck.

Yes, I'm going through this now! I had no clue why we had they. There is no fresh fruit laying around. The dog is not bothered. I feel like they love me for some reason. And, lately there are scales in the base of my hairline in the neck area. I can't use hydrogen peroxide since my couch is red. What can I do.
