Egyptian Feast?

Category Party Themes

My daughter is having an "Egyptian Feast" in her gifted class on Friday. Her teacher asked me to decorate the tables for the food. Does anyone have any suggestions what I can do on a LIMITED budget? Also, I need to include some Egyptian food items; any ideas on that too? Thanks!

Tabouli, BabaGhanou, Hommous, mid-Eastern bread to use as the scoopers for the tabouli, etc. Also, something easy is any sort of lentil dish, with rice. Pickled turnips are a good condiment that would be easy to make(at home simply cut the turnips into hunks and place in pickling jar with pickles. Dessert might be rice pudding, always good or dates wrapped in conf. sugar.

In a food processor, add the chickpeas and a third of the liquid, lemon juice, and garlic and puree. Season with salt and pepper. Serve in a small bowl, sprinkle with the paprika and drizzle with olive oil.

Hummus is the peanut butter of the Middle East. It can be served just on its own over simply toasted points of pita bread or spread on just about anything.

Stuffed Button Mushrooms.
Preparation time : 5 minutes Cooking time: 5 minutes. Makes 20 pieces.

20 fresh large mushrooms

1 teaspoon butter

For the stuffing.

1 teacup finely chopped parsley

2 slices fresh bread

1 chopped onion

1 chopped green chilli

A few drops lemon juice

Salt to taste

1. Heat the butter and fry the onion on a slow flame for 1 minute.
2. Add the green chillies and fry again for a few seconds.
3. Crumble the bread slices.
4. Add the crumbled bread, parsley, lemon juice and salt and cook for 1 minute.
5. Stuff the cavities of the mushroom caps(after cleaning and detaching the stem) with the stuffing.
6. Put the butter in a large frying pan and arrange the stuffed mushrooms in it.Cover and cook for 3 to 4 minutes.
Serve hot

As for table clothes.....anything colorful will do, especially if it has perhaps a touch of gold to it or shiny thread, flowers small consistant patterns...can pull the table cloth off.....Fresh flowers on the table is not bad idea....dishes that have several places for various dips to go in....large round platters to hold finger foods. I do not know how far you need to go with the decorations or if it is just the table cloth. Or intricate tapestry in bright colors. And actyually you could get away with just a white sheet......why not?
