Baking Soda As A Kitchen Safety Precaution

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 163 Posts

With Christmas on the way you are normally cooking more than any other time. Buy a big box of baking soda and keep it within reach just in case you have a fire. You can buy a big box for about $3 at most big grocery stores and it sure beats having your kitchen burn down. So take an extra safety step and buy that box of baking soda. It may save you a lot in the long run.

Baking soda will put out VERY small grease fires, and it takes a lot. I'd recommend having a small fire extinguisher on the wall of the kitchen. Have the pressure checked every year. If your house is really in any danger of burning down, there aren't really any good shortcuts.

I saw a video demonstration by a fireman putting out a kitchen fire that was a pot on the stove. He quickly put on pot holders, took a kitchen towel, wet it thoroughly in the sink, wrung it out but it was still very wet. Then he carefully & slowly covered the pot with the wet towel extinguishing the fire immediately & safely. Turn off the heat & place the lid on the pot will put it out also.

A fire extinguisher or baking soda will sometimes splash & spread the fire. A dry chemical fire extinguisher is best rather and a water based. Smoke damage from a grease fire is often the worst part of the damage if the fire is put out with an extinguisher. I know from experience!
