Dog Peeing on Himself When Laying Down?

My dog is a year old Lab and for the past couple of mornings has been laying down and peeing on himself before I can let him out. He doesn't respond to his name when he is doing it, but knows he has done wrong.

This could be a health issue and you need to see the vet. He could have a bladder problem that needs medical attention. I would make an appointment immediately and get him to the vet. This sounds serious.

It could be a bladder infection and he has no control over it. He is still quite young maybe it will go away as he gets older.

He could have a urinary tract infection or something similar. I'd go to the vet.

It seems this is something he cannot control as dogs that have not been having previous "accidents" will not usually lay in a mess.

  • You say he "knows he has done wrong" so apparently he is acting "shamefaced" when the accident is brought to his attention.
  • Please try not to scold him as he really will not understand why he is being scolded - just that he has done something that displeases you.
  • A vet trip will be expensive as they will probably have to check his urine and may run blood tests and ALL of these tests can be expensive.
  • Most likely there is some sort of health issue that cannot be treated at home with home remedies.
  • A vet trip should be scheduled as soon as possible so you will know what is causing your pup to do this.

If the vet says there is no health issue then you will know this may be an "attention getter" problem and since a lab is a large breed he may need more exercise. Lots of exercise can be solution to many dog problems.

Love and attention with no scolding for "accidents" may be the only solution you need. Talk to your vet.
