Face Scrub Shelf Life?

So in the olden days food was kept for longer with the aid of sugar and spice, also oils. It is my thinking then that a face scrub with oats and spice and honey and oil should have a decent shelf life and longer in the fridge, but ultimately you want it sitting in the shower recess ready to use right?

Oats, that's the problem because it is the food that will go off and start to stink! But what are people's thoughts on the percentage of oats to oil and honey and spice in order to hopefully make it last longer?

If you make up just the rolled oats and the spice, without any liquid, it should keep as long as the rolled oats are fresh (like whatever is on the package). As soon as you mix anything with it, you risk the oats going bad...depending on the humidity of the area they are kept. Keeping it in the shower is a recipe for a mess with mold.

Best to keep oats fresh and dry, then mix up and use what you need when you need it.

I'm not sure that you are right because as we know sugar is a great natural preservative and so it depends what you are mixing with your oats. Much of would depend though on ratio so I hope someone might have already experimented.

Sugar is a great preservative, as you say, however you still risk issues because sugar itself attracts moisture (you said you wanted to keep it in the shower) and when it gets wet, what you are "sugaring" could ferment. If you are an expert at fermenting (obviously a good preservation method--but I am not so sure for face masks), go for it, but I know gone wrong, it can have quite the wrenched smell!

This is totally unrelated, but be careful with using raw sugar in a face mask. For people like me, who have very sensitive skin and raw sugar scrubs can cause irritation. Last one I tried made me look like I had rosacea when I was done. Hopefully that won't be a problem for you.

Cosmetics made from natural ingredients can be stored in the refrigerator for no more than a month, I would even say less. For example, LUSH masks (this company specialize in making cosmetics from natural ingredients) can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 28 days.

You can prepare dry ingredients in advance and store them separately, not in a damp place.

After reading responses It does not sound like anyone has experimented with this type of mask ingredients.
I know that many people prefer to make a larger batch and then store 'one time use' in individual containers. This way they store containers in refrigerator but can take one out and leave it in shower for a day or so. Small closable containers can be purchased at the Dollar Tree but some people use empty medicine containers.

You might could try something similar and do your own experiments. Maybe change the ratio to see if it prolongs the life of your masks.

Homemade items with food should be refrigerated and used up within a month. You cannot make it last longer unless you add preservatives.
