Finding Beds and Mattresses for Low Income Family?

I'm disabled on SSI and SSD with 750$ monthly income with a family of 4. We moved into a home with bed bugs. The mattresses are infested now- family getting horribly bitten.

You can ask churches, Freecycle, Craigslist and Offerup. Get the landlord to exterminate the bedbugs or they will infest the replacement mattresses, too.

If you plan to continue living in the same home then you will have to completely irradiate the bedbugs from your house before any other furniture can be brought in.

This is not a simple job as it will probably mean removing all of the bedding and cleaning all of the clothing in the house.
You may have to have an exterminator do this job (except for the clothing).
If the bedbugs were in the home before you moved in then the landlord would be responsible for the clean up.
But if you brought the bedbugs in then it is your responsibility to do the clean up. Most of the clean up will be manual labor.

Since you are on SSI and SSDI and have 4 children you qualify for several government programs and one of them is HUD. They should help you get suitable housing (there may be a waiting list but in an emergency, they do sometimes find temporary housing until you reach the top of the list).

I'm sure you qualify for food-stamps and other assistance as well as Medicaid.
When you combine all of these your total usable 'income' is actually a lot higher than $750.

There are places to find free furniture but generally you must have your own transportation for pick up as well as sufficient help to load and unload whatever you find.

You can always search the free ads on Craigslist, Freecycle and want ads but you can also place a 'wanted' add on these same sites as well as Nextdoor. Just state what you need and reasons for not being able to pay.

If you belong to a local church then it may be possible to ask for help through one of their programs.
I do not believe you will find very many used mattresses at thrift stores and not many will give away their new furniture.

I would definitely try Nextdoor.com and Craigslist.org. They are gems for finding stuff super cheap or free.

Do you have family, friends or neighbors you could ask?

Also check out Goodwill Outlet, they have really good deals on furniture items.
