Ford Windstar Van Dash Lights Don't Stay On?

I have a 2000 Ford Windstar van. My dash lights come on for a few minutes and go back out. What would cause it to do that?

Any time you have intermittent lights it means there is a short in the electrical system. You need to have the car serviced.

The dash lights going on and off was the first sign I needed a new battery. A few days after it started, the battery was dead.

Check the battery before proceeding. Post back with an update!

Have your alternator checked out by a mechanic. Although yes, things like this could just be an electrical short, it could also be your alternator. What you may see to start off with, is exactly what you are describing as going on now. And if not checked into, it can lead to your battery going dead, replacing that, then having the new battery died quickly due to draining faster than normal due to the real problem being the alternator.

I have had this happen in previous vehicles as have friends and family. My family are fairly knowledgeable about the inner workings of vehicles as well. Good luck with everything.

Take your van to one of the auto parts stores - Auto Zone, Advance, - and ask them to run a diagnostic check to see if they can find your problem.
This service is free and it usually spots the problem.
Their machine will run a printout and you can see for yourself.

It appears that you have a wire that is shorting out in your electrical system on the dashboard of the car. You could also have a fuse in the box that is going bad or not making a good contract.
