You might have a mineral buildup. You can saw the compartment in half, clean it out and epoxy it back together again.

Also...you might check the batteries if your model has them.
Following another post below, I was about to throw mine away. I couldn't open the unit but decided there was nothing to lose, so I banged it gently a number of times on the work top and now it's working again!
