House Trained Dog Pooping in the House?

I have a 3 year old pure bred Australian Shepherd and these past two weeks he has been pooping in my house in the same spot. I let him outside before I leave and he poops outside then I leave for work. I am only gone for 5 hrs and when I come home there is poop on the floor. He knows he's in trouble because he runs. I yell at him and lock him in my room, but he still does it the next day. There has been no change in his diet, or our routines during the week. He eats normally and drinks normally. He is always full of energy and doesn't seem to be ill. I am out of ideas. Anyone know something I can do to fix this issue?

If this is new then you might try a few of these thing to fix the problem.

  • You take the dog out before going to work and he goes to the toilet just fine. When you bring him home you might need to confine him to a smaller location in your home or lock him in a room.
  • If he keeps pooping in the home you might have to put him in a crate while you are gone to work.
  • Is there anyone who can come and walk the dog while you are at work?
  • Do you have a yard you could leave the dog in while you are gone to work?
  • If you will need to clean the area where he poops with a disinfectant cleaners to get rid of the smell and order that is left behind.

  • You could also try using poop pads for the dog during the time you are gone to work.

I have one suggestion. Dont yell at your dog. Unless you catch your dog in the act, he doesn't connect you yelling with his own actions. It just makes him fearful and unable to focus. You need to catch him within about 10 seconds and correct him for him to make the connection. This is dog training 101. When you do catch him and want to correct him use a low firm and steady voice. Take him outside immediately and praise him if he performs.

Dog pooping on the floor.

Step 1
He may be afraid of something like a loud noise or something.

Step 2
Is there some kind of construction going on?

Step 3
You may have to put him in a crate while your gone or a smaller spot in your house.

Step 4
If you catch him going to the bathroom on the floor scold him.

Step 5
Then take him outside when he is finished give him several treats and praise him.

Step 6

There could be a number of different reasons your dog is doing this.

  • Is your work schedule a new schedule that your pet may not be used to yet? If so, they may be having a hard time adapting even with you taking them out before/after work.

  • Do you have your pet on a monthly preventive to prevent intestinal parasites? Roundworms, hookworms, etc. can be easily contracted and can cause many different issues with bowel movements such as: not being able to control them, diarrhea, etc. There could also be other medical issues such as a bacterial infection. I recommend calling and checking in with your veterinary office and possibly doing an intestinal parasite screening to be sure. You should be able to drop off a sample of feces at your veterinary office and they can send it to be tested for you, super easy!
  • It could also be separation anxiety. Your veterinarian should be able to give you information on calming medications you can give to your pet or agents that you can use in your home. Adaptil is a brand that has home diffusers and collars for dogs dealing with anxious situations. You can also try leaving one of your t-shirts with your scent out with your pet and that may help.

I hope this was helpful and your sweet baby can get back to normal soon!

In your question you say there have been no changes in daily routine or his diet so those things can be ruled out.

  • You do say he is pooping in the same spot so that seems to indicate that a past odor may still be present.
  • Whatever type of cleaning solution you use may not be removing all of the odor.
  • You will need an enzyme cleaner as regular cleaners will not work. Here is an example of an enzyme cleaner.
  • There are quite a few products available at Walmart type stores and all pet stores.

  • A good cleaning may help but you should barricade the area for a while also.
  • If you cannot confine him to a smaller area or crate then I would suggest you feed him a much smaller breakfast until you can break this habit.
