Identifying a Three Legged Turned Chair?

Identifying a Three Legged Turned Chair - three legged chair with triangle seat, turned legs, and a design carved into the back restI am looking for information about this three legged turned chair which I recently bought. I have found a similar chair on pamono.com and the owner claims that it is designed by German expressionist Bernhard Hoetger. Can this one also be designed by this architect? Where can I look for any evidence, and finally how to determine its value?

I have seen these called Monkstol Chair or monk chairs. Not sure about the designer. I need to do some more research on value. It's been a while, but I have seen them from $25 to $2500 asking prices. Never saw one sell or why the huge differences. Let me do a little more digging to find out the details.

So I am so fascinated with the chair! Check with this museum when they reopen as they have one that most closely resembles yours www.nordiskamuseet.se/.../about-us

From my research there are many makers and imitations of both the style and carvings. That is why the huge value differences.

It appears to be a frequently copied/forged piece and could be as old as 19th century or as new as a few years ago. With the older ones experienced antique dealers often need to find a more experienced person to decifer real from fake.

My best suggestion is after the museum opens talk to the curator in their furniture department and ask for help authenticating your piece. I hope you will post back in June with an update on what you learn!!

This has been fun to research! Thanks for sharing!

Well you certainly acquired an interesting chair.
There does not appear to be markings on these as no one has showed pictures of any markings.

The designer certainly has an interesting bio:

You may wish to seek an appraisal. An in person appraisal would be expensive but several sites offer free appraisals on items valued over $500 and sometimes less but they will give you a lot of information.
here are some sites if you wish to ask:

Hello! Did you find any information about the value and age of the chair. I just bought exactly the same one in Estonia.
BR, Irina
