It is a dough box style table. If you love it and want to give it a new life, refinish it and enjoy it! I haven't seen one sell lately so I don't know the current market value. Neat piece! Thanks for sharing!

This looks like a magazine table. I would not refinish it

It will be difficult to answer your question as you do not state what plans you have for this table.
Refinish for your personal use?
Refinish with plans to sell?

If you plan to sell then you should be aware that refinished furniture when done by 'amateurs' does not always sell well as amateur work usually shows a lot of flaws.
For personal use? You would probably love it.

All of the 'dough box' tables that I have seen were usually flat across the top and could have one or two 'lids'.
Similar to this table:

I ask a friend about your table and she said she was not sure about this one but thought it might not be a dough box table due to the size of the compartments. (Is one side larger than the other side?)
Dough boxes were generally used to store flour and add yeast while still in the box and place table near fireplace for dough to rise.

She believed it was a coffee table used for storing incidentals instead of having a drawer.
I'm still deciding but it is an interesting table so post a picture of the finished item (if you decide to refinish).

I think this is a MidCentury Mersman Coffee Table. Here is another Mersman Coffee Table, also with two not big boxes on the sides: estatesales.org/.../lot-65-midcentury-mersman-coffee...
