Is This Platter Sterling Silver or Plate?

Is This Platter Sterling Silver or Plate? - round silver tray with ornate edgeThis is stamped Reed and Barton 1126. A magnet doesn't stick to it and when I rubbed it with a white cloth it turned black. I can't find the exact plate on eBay under sold items or anything else online with this model number. I'm just wondering if it is older than the stamp law and/or silver. A similar item on eBay brought a pretty penny.

Sterling has to be marked as such. You most likely have silver plate. Any jeweler will be able to tell you.

Not all Sterling silver is marked. Very old hand made pieces were never marked sterling silver. They had Mark's like a coat of arms. Back in the day there was zero reason to mark it sterling because there was no such thing as electroplating.

Many Reed pieces are still sought after by collectors, which is quite unusual.

A reputable silver dealer can tell you if it is plated or sterling.

I have found a few examples of the sterling platters like this selling, not asking prices, in the $400-1000 range. The plated sell for $15-50.

The prices are all about location and supply and demand. They do sell better around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Take it to your nearest pawn shop and ask them if it is sterling or plated.
They will give you a low ball figure of worth (what they may buy it for).

If all you wish to know is whether it is sterling or silver plate, a pawn shop is the fastest and easiest place to ask.
I you want more information then I would suggest you contact Replacements.Com and ask them as they have information and can tell you the approximate value and if they are interested in buying.

Reed and Barton sells silver plated and sterling silver fine quality products.

Sterling silver would most likely have been marked.

It is normal when you rub it with a cloth it truns black this is tarnished and all silver and silver plate will turn black with tarnish. I do not see the silver stamp on the back of the plate so it is hard to tell if this is silver or silver plate.

You will really need to take this to a jewler to see the amount of silver in the platter or how much plate and silver mixture is in the platter.
