Janome Sewing Machine Won't Change Stitch Type?

I have a Janome New Home 18w machine and although I have had it 20+years it has served me well. The stitch selector changes to different stitches, but it only sews in running stitch. I spoke to a mechanic who told me it's not worth repairing?
