Keeping Flies Out of Cat Food Outside?

I have over ten cats plus kittens we feed out side, but the flies are so bad they won't eat and are losing weight. I have put fly strips, sprayed apple cider, everything, and gets worse!

The only thing I can think of that is keeping it so bad is that we have raccoons, possums, and armadillo that eat the food. Are dirty raccoons and possums the issue? If so what do I do? I can't handle it much longer!

Vacuum the flies before feeding. This may allow enough time for the cats to eat. Don't leave the food out. Feed only once or twice a day. Clean up any leftover food after each feeding. The cats may also be losing weight from anemia if they have flea infestations.

Try contacting a local spay/neuter group to advise you. The volunteers have a lot of knowledge about caring for cat colonies. They will also have advice about keeping the flies away. Keep up your good work of helping the cats.

Spray the area with lavender. Flies dont like the smell.

Are these "community cats" or your cats? If they are community cats, check out the website for trap/neuter/release information at bestfriends.org They will help you stop the growth of the community and get the cats healthy. If they are your cats, Best Friends will help you get things under control with spay/neuiter so you dont end up with even more cats.

As to keeping the flies away, feed only 2 times a day. Pick up any food when the cats finish eating and hose down the area if you can. The cats will learn to show up at feeding time so they dont miss out.

I know I hear you!! I actually tried this stuff called zevo. It is safe for humans and pets. What I did was remove all feeding bowls etc. Spray this stuff allover the areas where they eat. Like on the ground, shrubs, walls etc then feed them. When the cats R finished eating make sure they leave the area..then I spayed this stuff directly on the flies..it attacks their nervous system.

It's probably not a nice death but the flies no longer come around! Except for a few here and there!! PS..it uses essential oils and even though the bugs body is attacked it will not hurt pets and humans..no longer do we need to use very dangerous bug killing sprays
