Ammonia does kill fleas but it is one of the more difficult ways to do take care of a flea problem. You should have good ventilation and wear gloves when messing with ammonia and you should remove yourself and any pets from the whole area for at least 4 hours. This is not always an easy task but if using ammonia it HAS to be done.

  • You do not say how bad your flea problem happens to be or how large of an area you are working on so sometimes other methods may work just as well but with a lot less hassle.

  • Why not read some of the online remedies that vets recommend that are safe for you and your pets but still do a good job?

  • I have had numerous pets for many years and I only use Diatomaceous Earth (food grade only) as it kills the fleas and will keep on killing them as long as it is on the floor, carpet, sofa, beds, etc and an added benefit it also kills other bugs but most important; It is safe for humans and pets.
  • Diatomaceous Earth can be purchased at a lot of stores; Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace and True Value Hardware Stores, Amazon, and farm stores. It is not expensive and a little bit goes a long way.

  • Please, think about some of these other solutions before using ammonia.

DE does not work. I put it liberally all over my floors and I still have fleas

DE kills some fleas, but not enough to even make a dent. The fleas I have are extremely resistant to any kind of poison I've tried and I have tried them all (I've spent over $10,000 fighting fleas for the past year).

My daughter brought them to college and was successful getting rid of them using ammonia. I was against it, but I am going to try it now.

Diatomaceous Earth DOESNT work for me at all. I use rubbing alcohol, 91% lightly dialuted. Make sure there is no flame anywhere in the house because of fumes. I use it in ventilated area with no pets around. It kills fleas on spot! You have to repeat it many times to break the flea cycle. This is the cheapest and most effective way for me.

Use it straight, but keep pets out for at least 4 hours. Ventilate the room after

Ammonia is one of the more dangerous ways to kill fleas. I personally would use it as an absolute last resort.

Exactly where are you trying to kill them? If they are on your pet, don't use anything your vet hasn't ok'd. If it is in the carpet a good vacuuming, and stream cleaning.

Always keep kids and pets away from any of the options... even the natural ones.

Yes straight, but I'd keep the area free of people and pets for the day.

Ammonia is very dangerous to use it is harmful to pets and fumes for humans.

Am listing another simple method.

1. Dish soap
This home flea remedy involves creating a flea trap using dish soap and some water. All you have to do is fill a plate or bowl with a mixture of warm water and dish soap and place it in the rooms of your house which receive the most flea activity.

The water and dish soap solutions act as a glue, trapping the fleas due to the high viscosity of the solution. You should repeat this method with a fresh batch every day.

Hope this helps.
