Ammonia does kill fleas but it is one of the more difficult ways to do take care of a flea problem. You should have good ventilation and wear gloves when messing with ammonia and you should remove yourself and any pets from the whole area for at least 4 hours. This is not always an easy task but if using ammonia it HAS to be done.
DE does not work. I put it liberally all over my floors and I still have fleas
DE kills some fleas, but not enough to even make a dent. The fleas I have are extremely resistant to any kind of poison I've tried and I have tried them all (I've spent over $10,000 fighting fleas for the past year).
Diatomaceous Earth DOESNT work for me at all. I use rubbing alcohol, 91% lightly dialuted. Make sure there is no flame anywhere in the house because of fumes. I use it in ventilated area with no pets around. It kills fleas on spot! You have to repeat it many times to break the flea cycle. This is the cheapest and most effective way for me.

Exactly where are you trying to kill them? If they are on your pet, don't use anything your vet hasn't ok'd. If it is in the carpet a good vacuuming, and stream cleaning.
