Possible Valuation of Lane Cedar Chest?

A cedar chest painted white. This chest was given to me as a gift. The giver repainted it. If I read the serial number correctly, its dated 1954. It is in very nice condition. I see tho that it has the dangerous kind of lock on it, which I would have removed if I thought the value would be worth the change. Over all just curious. Thank you.

Vintage Lane cedar chests sell for around $100-$700 depending on the age, condition, and whether the hardware is original. Most are worth about $200-$400. To date a Lane cedar chest reverse the three pairs of numbers that comprise the 6-digit serial number.

This Lane cedar chest has had the lock removed and is listed for $145:

Too bad it has been painted as this usually reduces the value.
Of course, that is not always the case as some people will buy these even if they have been redone but that usually depends on how well it was done. If an amateur did the painting then you could probably expect your chest to sell for less than $100.
But then again, your area will have a large bearing on the final value no matter the condition.
A chest is very heavy and shipping will be expensive so most likely it would need to be listed for sale as 'local pick up only'.

That means value would depend on if your area is into cedar chests
or if they pass them by if on the curb.

If your chest is really in excellent condition (no damage on top?) it could be listed for sale starting at $250 with local pick up and best offers considered.

As to the lock: you definitely should remove the old lock as it is very dangerous and easily replaced.
In many areas, it is against the law to sell it with the old lock and online sites will not let it be listed without the old lock removed.

Your Lane chest could be worth up to $250. I would leave the original lock on if I intended to sell it. If you want to keep it and safety is an issue, change it.

It is with new security lock mounted.

I think you have to replace the lock. Lane will supply a replacement at no cost.

Your Lane Cedar Chest is in the "Modern style". This style was quite popular during the 1950's.
Lane chests have been made in the tens of millions, so they tend to have modest values. Comparable Lane Chests are on sale for less than $250

There is a price of $490 with 10% off for Mid Century Lane Cedar Chest www.chairish.com/.../1953-mid-century-lane-blonde-blanket...
Original design modified (it is painted). But I think this price is too high.
I think that the price of your chest is about $150, but the price depends on where you will sell it, on the demand in your area.

The lock needs to be replaced. To order your replacement kit, contact a Lane Lock representative by email at new.lock@heritagehome.com
or call free (800) 225-0265, or order it at www.lanefurniture.com/.../product-safety
You will need to know:
serial number,
latch shape (rectangular or circular).
