Repairing a Smith Corona Corsair Typewriter?

I purchased a beautiful blue Smith Corona Corsair Deluxe on eBay a couple of weeks ago. The type wasn't showing up 100% at first, but it was okay. Within a few days of only typing a sentence or two a day, the letters abruptly stopped showing up (very light type). I spent $17 to buy a new ribbon and installed it. For a few days, the type was perfect and a strong black. Then, this morning, the top halves of the letters were not appearing (very light), and then right after, the entirety of the letters stopped showing up. The movement of the typewriter is perfect and the letters appear to be striking the ribbon clean and strong. What's the deal?

It almost sounds like the ink ribbon you have purchased is dried out and this can happen if it has set on the shelf too long. Other than this the type writter sounds perfect. You can try to clean the area behind the ribbon and remove any dried ink that could be there.

Even though you did buy used and as is. I would think eBay would offer some kind of protection. Notify the seller first and then notify eBay.

It sounds like the problem is with the ribbon.
You say you purchased it 'new' but where did you buy it from?
You should be contacting the person/store that sold you the ribbon and

not anyone about the typewriter - unless of course, you get a really new ribbon and still have a problem.
eBay will help you solve the problem but you should be sure the typewriter is at fault before asking for help.

If you also bought the ribbon off eBay then report it immediately and ask for a refund or a really new ribbon.

It is possible the new ribbon was bad. Was it new old stock? Where did you buy the ribbon? That is where I would start.

If it is on eBay, the protocol is to contact the seller first and ask what their return policy is. If they do not have a return policy, you can call eBay and ask for next steps.
