Repairing an Old Olivetti Electric Typewriter?

I have an old electric Olivetti. I was using my typewriter when suddenly the carriage got stuck and I was able to hear the motor spinning without it moving. I had to restart the machine, but this problem keeps happening, even 2 or 3 times a row. Sometimes the motor spins without moving after 2 seconds, but this also happens and the carriage starts to shake left and right.

You probably need a motor repair, or a new motor.

It is almost impossible to offer solutions to these older machines unless someone had one in the past and is familiar with this machine.

  • Many times you can Google for vintage or Olivetti Electric typewriter repair shop with your zip code and you may be lucky and have one or two in your area.

  • These people can many times just do a minor adjustment and the cost may be low but then this is a specialty and they will charge for their services.
  • Sometimes you can read solutions for other brands and some may work for you as these are all similar machines.
  • Here is what came up on Google and you can see there are a lot of sites to check out.
  • Here is a site the may still be answering questions.
  • typewriter.boardhost.com/search.php

You don't mention the model...so I wasn't able to find a specific one...but there are a ton of YouTube troubleshooting and fix it videos out there:

For big items, like appliances I always say go to the expert...but for smaller items, sometimes it is worth it to take a quick YouTube check first. Just be aware, that like the big things, monkeying with it can make it worse...but sometimes you fix things...like me with my 30 year old vacuum...and I am TOTALLY not handy.

Hope you find a good solution! The others gave some good advice also.
