The on/off switch may be broken.

I love the sound of a typewriter! I am so happy to hear that people still use them! Sorry yours is not working.

This site has manuals, maybe there is a troubleshooting section in the manual:

I have yet to try the site yet...have some things on the list I want to...they say they offer free advice which includes typewriters:

If it turns out you need a part, I am always shocked at how many parts are up for grabs on eBay. It actually started a new little cottage project for me deconstructing broken items and selling them. I have not had the courage to do a typewriter yet (it seems a bit sacrilegious)....but I have sold off broken dolls for parts.

I believe your typewriter, Silver Reed ex-30 is one of the first machines so if it has not been serviced in a while that may be just what it needs.

• There is not a lot of information about the ex-30 but maybe some of the other model problems are generic and instructions could apply to your machine also.
• If you have been using your machine and this problem just came up, you may have just something worked loose and needs to be tightened or replaced.
• You can Google Silver Reed ex-30 typewriter problems or troubleshoot and some Silver Reed info will come up. See if there is anything similar happening with another model. If not, you may have to Google vintage Silver Reed repair shops with your zip code and call around and see if anyone can help you.
• Most likely they will want to service your typewriter.
• Here are some links that you can check out. One is a forum you can join and ask questions but other are for information that may help you in the future.
