Repairing the Gear Assembly on a Murray Riding Mower?

I have a Murray 38 in. manual transmission riding mower and it is missing a piece that changes the gears. Do I have to keep my foot on the clutch the whole time to control how fast it goes? What part do I need and how do I fix it?

Did you do the repair yourself? I always suggest when people do they turn it into a YouTube video!! I may be an old dog, but this site has taught me some new tricks for many things...mostly craft related, but I always tell people I fixed my vacuum (twice) using videos!!
