Store Flour in Freezer

Gold Post Medal for All Time! 677 Posts

A container of flour being stored in the freezer.Freezing flour for 24 hours will kill any larvae, saving you a lot of work getting rid of pantry moths.

Freezing grains also prevents them from getting rancid. I always have my flour in the freezer.

Ooo very smart, thumbs up. Funnily enough, every time I see a bag of flour, I have a flashback to my college boyfriend trying to make me a cake for my birthday and it being infested with bugs. SHUDDER! This tip makes me happy!

I have heard this really works. I have never had a problem with bugs but I keep my flour, sugar, meal etc in jumbo zip lock bags. I used to buy them in the store but now I have to order them on line.

Sometimes the eggs are already in the meal and freezing takes care of them.

Judy

I'm sensing Déjà vu all over again. There was a similar tip posted some time back, and like yours, I didn't understand it.

I can see freezing larvae free flour to extend its shelf life, but I don't understand freezing larvae filled flour.

When do you sift the larvae out, before or after freezing? Or do you? One bug, I could pick out, maybe; but infested flour would go back to the grocer.

I can see freezing flour to prevent larval infestation, but that's about it. What am I missing?

I have never had any bugs, but that is what I heard.

Freezing flour keeps the bugs from getting in. I've kept my flour in the freezer, along with other flours besides AP, cornmeal, pancake mix, and Bisquick.

I started doing this when I got my first bread machine about 30 years ago. They recommended using ingredients as cold as possible.
