What Breed Is My Dog?

What Breed Is My Dog? - black and white puppy next to white older dogI live in England and Pit Bulls are banned. I worry my new puppy, 13 weeks old and tall, is looking more and more like a Pit every day. I have 2 young children and he's fine with them, but the word Pit Bull strikes fear into me. I am looking for reassurance of his breed if he is a Pit Bull.

I have a 11 year old dog who keeps him in his place, but I'm scared he might stand up to her when he's older. Training classes are going to start once he's had his last injection. I'm scared to ask the vet his breed as they might put him to sleep, if he's found to be a Pit Bull. I got told he is an American Bull Dog x Staffie.

The only way to know for sure is to do a DNA test. Why would they put him to sleep unless he bit someone?

Because it is against the law to have his breed. They will destroy him.

Not quite muscular enough to be a pit bull. If you're afraid, get an at-home DNA test

He's only 12 weeks old in that pic. Can I buy a DNA online? That would be so reassuring, over here we have to register and constantly muscle them. They can't go out until after a certain time to avoid people.

Stupid! Overreacting big time, little Hugo is as soft as any dog I've had. Any dog can flip.

You say training starts after "last injection" so are you taking him to the vet for injections? If so, has your vet mentioned his breed? I could be mistaken but I was under the assumption that vets had to report a "suspected" pit? Maybe that is no longer true - just wondered.
You should get a DNA test so that you can put your fears to rest or make other arrangements for this puppy. You must take care of this quickly as you will only grow more and more attached as time goes on and that will make things more difficult. Your vet can do a DNA test and you will be able to know right away (within a few days). They should/will also help you deal with any "bad" news. usually, a DNA test from a vet will be more expensive.

I believe that England is still relying on the looks/appearance of the dog in determining if it an illegal pit but if you have proof of breed then the court will usually accept a legitimate DNA test result. It is also my understanding that a dog can have a small amount of pit in their mix and still be approved for release to a home so a test seems to be a good thing to do.

DNA test kits are sold here is pet stores (don't know about England) but you can buy them from Amazon, eBay and other sites. The kits usually cost $45 - 200 dollars so you may need to check around.

Here is a link that explains about the DNA test results but these tests keep getting better and better as the demand gets higher. Also a link about pit bulls being banned in England/UK as many Americans do not know anything about this law as we have pit bulls all over the US.

Here is a link to one site (UK) that sells DNA test kits but there are many other sources. Also, this is an older test as they now have a 4.0 kit (this one is a 2.0) and that means the newer test checks against more breeds.
