I am about to be a first time grandma or I guess I should say step-grandma which makes this all the more important. I want to crochet a baby afghan for my coming grandson. They are doing a jungle theme room. I would like to make something not lacey but kind of like a net I guess to fit the theme.

I am a simple crocheter but need something that turns out looking spectacular. That is just what my daughter-in-law expects. Please give me ideas for what kind of yarn and hook to use. Please help me out here. No one on this site has ever let me down! Thanks!

Hi Karen,

I'm not much of a crocheter myself, but I did find these free patterns that might be worth a look:

www.crochetpatterncentral.com/.../afghans.php

In my head, it seems like you could perhaps chain several identical lengths of single crochet, and then link them together at right angles with lengths of other single chain for a grid pattern (to make your net design -- as loose or as tight of squares as you like), and then finish around the edges with maybe a double crochet. At the "corners" of each netting square, you could embellish with a wood-tone or jungle-themed button.

But this is just in my mind's eye, and like I say, I'm not a crochet expert! You might also try a very simple pattern with a large hook in neutral colors like chocolate brown, khaki, and sage or cream.

I don't crochet. Except a single stitch and you can't do much with that! I do, however, make beautiful quilts. Maybe you could turn out something " spectacular" if you went with something you're used to doing.

I am looking for crocheted turban patterns, as many as I can find. Senior citizens love these. I have been searching Google, but have only been able to find the knitted kinds and I cannot knit.

sample of patternI am looking for a shawl pattern. The pattern was bought about 40+ years ago from F. W. Woolworth under its own brand name, but I can't remember what that was. It is a baby's shawl worked in 3 ply wool with a border. The shawl is of an open design of small squares on the diagonal. It is crocheted in one piece then a crocheted border is added. This is the basic pattern.

I think you might mean Winfield (as in Frank Winfield Woolworth). Had a search and can only come up with an old Woolco pattern but it may help: www.freevintagecrochet.com/.../square-shawl

You can go to
www.myhq.com/.../

then hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, then hit the letter f, then release both keys. In the box that pops up, type "filet" (without the quotes), then click the 'Find Next' button and look at the filet pattern that is highlighted. Hit the 'Find Next' button to located the next filet crochet pattern.

This makes it easier to locate only filet crochet patterns from the list instead of trying to do it yourself line by line. There are lots of great patterns at this site. Some of the links don't work any more, but most of them do. Hope you find something really great to make.

HERES A CHILDRENS SIZE CHART:
www.clearwaterknits.com/.../children.html
* If you use the above chart & the gauge of your yarn you can change pretty much any size kids pattern to a different size!

When I go into some Walmart's, I always look in their basket of free knit & crochet pattern sheets. Sometimes, I'll come home with 50 different patterns! I've noticed they have quite a few for children. But, you're right, most are made for smaller kids.

* You might also try the Lionbrand yarn site, ( & other yarn makers sites) as they have lots of free patterns.
