I live in Minnesota in a mobile home. Our roof is leaking so badly. There are bad stains in every room. I am on Social Security and my partner is in very bad health so we cannot afford to fix it.

Living on Social Security does not always mean you are "poorly" as I know some who have more (take home pay) with their SS than they had when working. Other circumstances can change your ability to make needed repairs.

  • There are a lot of government agencies that provide help with the type of repairs you are describing but they also have many qualifications and their "qualifying/approval" time is very slow/lengthy.
  • They will have to verify your total income (of all people living in the household), your eligibility for government assistance programs (food stamps, medicaid, etc), and the ownership of your trailer.

  • These "help" programs work faster if you are already on one of these programs as they can verify your information through those agencies.
  • First question will be do you own this trailer as they will not help if it is a rented/leased trailer because any repairs would be the responsibility of the landlord (they may still help you if there is a mortgage on the trailer/land).
  • Roof repairs are some of the most expensive types of repairs and can only be done by licensed repair people and they have to obtain city/county permits which are also expensive and permits are not always given if the house/trailer is in very bad disrepair in several other areas.
  • I am only mentioning these things because many people think these programs just go out and help people and that is just not the case.
  • Approving assistance is a long and lengthy process and many times there is not sufficient funds available and even if approved, someone may be placed on a long waiting list.

  • They may recommend other solutions (such as moving to income based housing) if it appears it would be a long time period before they could help you.
  • This type of assistance is even difficult for a church to help as they still have to have permits (even if it just repairs and not replacing a roof) and also licensed workmen.
  • Have you tried getting a loan (second mortgage?) as many times this can be done with low monthly payments.
  • You may want to try Habitat for Humanity as they will many times work faster than government agencies. But, then again, this type of repair is one of the most difficult to obtain due to the cost and permits required.
  • Do-it-yourself roof repairs are not usually legally done if permits are not acquired.
  • Here is a link to a find Habitat agency in your area
  • and links to other agencies that might be able to help.

I am in need of some roofing repairs. I live in Pennsylvania. There are about 4 spots leaking pretty good. I am sure the roof is 20 years old, but I am more than fine with getting the spots fixed.

Does anyone know of any places in PA that can help a low income homeowner on disability get repairs?

So sorry to hear you are having issues. Don't give up hope for help...sometimes it just takes a lot of digging and asking.

We live in a great state as there are some resources that may help you, although my understanding is they have wait lists...so if this is critical you may want to see if you can get financial help from a church or friends (a Go Fund me) or local club or organization like Rotary or Kiwanis who may offer help to get it taken care of privately.

The PA specific sites are:

ohcdphila.org/.../

philly.curbed.com/.../philadelphia-free-home-repair-programs

dced.pa.gov/.../

www.phfa.org/.../housingapplication.aspx

If you need help understanding these programs or cutting through the red tape, you can take to your state senator, who it looks like is this person:

www.legis.state.pa.us/.../senate_bio.cfm?id=1044

His office may be able to assist you with things like Legal Aide (since you mentioned a party wall situation) and free notary. Ours in Pittsburgh is amazing!! They have always been very helpful for us.

You don't mention what your disability is, but some national disability organizations....like Easter Seals, the MS Society, the some Cancer organizations and such have programs to help people with a specific condition. You may want to call your local United Way office and see if they can help you.

Good luck!

I am sorry to hear you are still having issues. Try one more link or call 211:

Roofing is a huge challenge because of the expense and liability.

It may be easier to work with a religious organization or civic organization to help you get funding so you can use that funding to hire someone to do the repairs.

Go Fund Me is also a good way to raise money for things. Sometimes people know someone needs help, but are either embarrassed or afraid to offer, but if you ask, they will be generous. Just a thought! Prayers will continue.

I am 51. My roof is falling in and has mold on the outside. My ceilings are also falling in on the inside of my house from the roof leaking. Now I have black mold growing in my installation. I do not have the money to fix this; I live on 735 dollars a month. I cannot get a loan because the house is in such bad shape, and also my credit rating is not good. falling ceiling

I have my daughter living with me and we are staying sick all the time from the mold and it is getting worse by the day. Is there anywhere that I can get help to repair this? I do not have the money to pay for these repairs.

I would suggest churches, Habitat for Humanity, Family Services, and the Boy Scouts. The reason I say Boy Scouts, is because years ago I know one area where a boy scout started a program to help people in your situation as his Eagle Scout project.

There are programs that provide assistance via grants for home repair, however, the process to apply for specific programs takes time and patience.

Finding home repair help can be difficult! A very easy online search for "low income home repair new mexico" produced many replies. You can try a search yourself and this US Department of Housing, etc., site to start. The people there will try to help you or suggest other resources.

Where is Clarksburg? Are you in the USA? If you are, then contact your local DFS office (division of family services) and ask them. They should have a listing of resources. Many churches (larger ones) may also have a resource list.

There is a nationwide organization that helps seniors and disabled people with home repairs. I can't tell you the name of it because it has different names in different locations, even in different cities in the same state. I THINK most of the time it is referred to as Opportunities for Independent Living(OIL). They go by income, and let's face it some people get a large amount for disability.

I have a friend who between disability from the state where she was injured on the job, Federal government disability(SSD), her retirement SS and her ex-husbands retirement SS, she gets well over $2,000 a month and complains about not being able to do this or that. I live off $700 a month retirement SS and manage to get by.

That being said back in 1983 I decided to move into an apartment (I was 43), and don't have to worry about lawn care, snow removal, etc. I also don't have to worry about home repairs, heat, water, sewer, garbage, and my cable is also included in the rent as a thank you for renting from the landlord.

That being said, if a person does get help from the nationwide organization, they have to stay in the home for a certain number of years or else pay back on a pro-rated basis. I have a sister who got help from them and ended up having to go into a nursing home, and when her house was sold, a portion of what she made on the sale had to go to pay back the organization that repaired her home. There is also a waiting list to get this help.

Speak with your social worker/welfare worker at the Department of Social Services/Welfare Office. Also I don't know if the Salvation Army where you live would help. This summer in the city where I live they have volunteers from different businesses that are volunteering to paint houses for seniors. My guess is for the repairs that you need they would have to find volunteers from a building supply place or something. Your best bet will be to ask questions.

I am looking for a grant or some type of program that will get my roof replaced and to get my bathroom floor replaced. I need a shower because after surgery I can not step over the tub to get into it. It's a long story, but I will try to let you know what happen. I was in a accident years ago when an eye beam went through my left leg and I didn't start having trouble with it again until 2017 from 1998.

In 2017 after I started having trouble with my left leg again I couldn't get a doctor to replace my hip due to infections, but I finally did in 2018. I have had my left hip replaced and my right knee, but here is the sad part I need my left knee done now and my right hip. So if anyone knows where I may be able to get some help please let me know. Thank you.

I am a low income homeowner. I just got a new job and have a salary, but due to my bills have bad credit. My situation is that I desperately need a new roof on my house and can't afford that.

Please I need your help to see if you know someone/bank that could loan me a credit line based upon my salary and the monthly payment would be deducted straight from my paycheck.

My deep apologies for asking that, but no bank so far will do that. I need to find some more ideas or places to go.
Thank you very much.
God bless you.
