Request: Removing Dye That Transferred in the Wash
Archived on 11/10/2009
My granddaughter has a black shirt. I washed it out by hand to remove excess dyes. I then washed it with her other clothes and some black dye faded onto a pair of pink pants and a white shirt. What can I do to remove it? Help! The pants are brand new.

I would try Oxi Clean first. You can also try a powder made by Rit that is for this type of dye transfer. It's in the laundry section in a small box near where the Rit color dyes are. (09/08/2009)

The formula my mom uses is 1/2 cup powdered Cascade and 1/2 cup of chlorine bleach in a gallon of warm water. Soak garment for at least a few hours, or overnight. This has always worked for me when colors bleed. (09/11/2009)

I would not wash black anything with pink and white. I don't know if there is anything that would get it out of the clothes. (09/11/2009)

In the laundry aisle you will find a product called Shout Color Catcher. It is like a heavy fabric softener sheet. Follow the instructions and rewash the garment. I have had good luck with this product on several occasions. I hope it works for you! (07/29/2009)

My son is pretty upset with me. Somehow when I washed his very nice yellow shirt something blue apparently bled onto it. Don't have any idea what happened. Nothing else in the load was affected. Somehow I didn't catch it and it got put in the dryer. Is there anything I can do to get the blue stains out or do I owe him a new shirt?

Carbona and Rit both make Color Run Removers. Carbona and Shout also make dye grabbers and color catchers. Best luck. (05/06/2008)

My light pink blouse was washed with dark color clothes. Now it looks like it's a different colored pink. How do I remove the unwanted color?

Joann's craft store sells a product called "Rit Dye Powders - Color and Rust Removers" It works like a champ, and it's dirt cheap: less than $2.00 per package. (12/18/2007)
