Identifying Stuffed Animals?

Identifying Stuffed Animals - zebraI need help identifying three mohair stuffed animals: a terrier with a head that turns, a zebra, and a yellow bunny rabbit. All are circa 1940 to 1950 per the original owner. I'm not sure if that's accurate. That's just what he remembered. Your help is appreciated!

Steiff was around in the 1940s. Send the pictures to them here www.steiffusa.com/.../

Thank you! Based on a second comment I think they are not Steiffs. The eyes are plastic and I now think the hair is synthetic, at heart on the kitty.

These are my best guesstimates without being able to see, hold, and feel them--check for what the eyes are made of and what they are stuffed with:

The bunny looks like he may be a Knickerbocker brand. Is he velveteen (a synthetic fabric, or is he mohair---which is a sheep wool). If he is mohair, there is an off chance it is a Gund or a Steiff (but they were much more detailed and guy looks almost primitive).

Are the ears on the zebra felt? He may be a vintage Dakin (circa late 1950s). If not, he may be an FAO Schwartz item.

The terrier has me the most puzzled...I am not sure if he is a fox terrier or a west highland terrier...there is a very off chance he is a Steiff if he is mohair and the eyes are glass, but I am guessing he is a knock off because all the Steiff I know have different ears. He is the one that is the most puzzling as he is very detailed, yet he does not meet any of the big name pieces that I know (Steiff or Gund).

I will see if I can find any other info on him.

Post back if you learn anything in the meantime! Thanks for sharing!

I have a Knickerbocker Kitty, so that might make sense that the bunny is as well. Great to know! The ears on the zebra are felt, so that mystery might be solved as well. The dog is definitely not a Wheaton. The only other thing I can add is that his eyes are cold and glass. Looking forward to seeing if others have ideas about him.

Hi! I still haven't learned more about the dog, even researching other sites. I'm hoping someone will find this posting and help. Maybe I should list the dog on its own?

There is a Facebook group you could try....it is called Old Things Thrifters and Pickers ask to join and maybe someone there can ID the dog.

OR, there is another one called Doll & Toy Identification Help

They may be even better.

Both sites you have to ask to join, answer their questions, read their rules and then post. Be sure to give size, and all details.

DO NOT ask for values on these sites--once we get a good idea of who he is, I can help you with the value part.

Post back what you learn!! I am so excited to learn more about him. He is adorable. A "stuffy" mystery!!

Just read the bottom of this message. Thanks for the advice about only asking for help with identification, and for helping me price after!

Hi! I finally requested to join the two groups you mentioned. Hopefully I'll be approved and be able to ask about our mystery dog. I'm so curious too!

Here is a link to the Doll land Toy identification Facebook group replies. The Steiff find they show do look like my dog.

Unfortunately the link is broken, but I just found the post on my own feed. I think they are probably right that it is a Steiff!! That is way cool!!! I hadn't thought of parents removing the tag for safety reason. That makes sense.

Since there is not a tag, you cannot officially advertise it as a Steiff, but you still may be able to fetch up to $50 for him by putting a question mark after Steiff in the title and talking about his features in the headline like if he is jointed, the fabric, the color, etc.

I suggest doing this as a 7 day auction (start and end on a Sunday afternoon) with the least your would take for him as your starting price (being realistic so maybe 29.95) and then letting the market dictate the final value.

There are a number of ones like yours on eBay at the moment so keep watch out for when there are only one or two and get yours in the mix!

You will have to be clear there is NO tag and you are not positive it is a Steiff, but that your research is leading you to that direction and tell the prospective buyer to zoom on the photos and inspect them carefully BEFORE bidding.

Be sure to use all 12 photos eBay allows and point out any flaws in text and in photos!

I am very excited for you and greatly appreciate you posting back!!

Let me know how your sale goes!

PS, I don't know if you are in the US or not, but I suggest if you are not an experienced seller, set up the auction for US only. International sales can be daunting even to experienced sellers! If you are overseas, I amend my comment to your comfort shipping outside your country.

Thanks again!
