Identifying a Snake in East Tennessee - long dark snake with lighter markings, appears to be no venomousWhat kind of snake is this? We are curious and so are our neighbors! BTW, we live in east Tennessee with a wooded lot behind our house.

It looks like a garter snake. Harmless

It could be either a baby rat or eastern snake. Here is a link with good photos to match yours to the photo:

Both are not harmful to people but eat small rodents and such.

Both love debris around houses to nest so if you clean up any leaves and such, it should move on.

The photo looks similar to a garter snake which is a harmless snake. I know snakes can be dangerous but this one you should not worry about. You can try and box it up to get it out of your yard or call the animal control to see if someone will come and take it away for you.
