Maytag Washer Not Spinning All of the Water Out?

My Maytag washer, mah5500bww, won't always spin out the clothes. When it does the clothes seem still wetter than normal. I checked the codes. It always comes up 17 or 18 on the diagnostic, but the door locks OK. It's an older washer.

This could be an issue with your drainage pump or a clog in the pump. You might need to remove the machine and check to see if you need to clean out any filters or hoses in the back of the machine so the pumps can drain. Otherwise, you might need to replace your drain pump on the machine because it isn't pumping out all the water and draining correctly.

The drain hose could be kinked

There are several reasons your Maytag washer is not spinning correctly all the time but since it is an older washer the code number may not really mean very much.

  • These are listed as the three most common reasons that causes a washing machine to not spin/drain properly.
  • Water Pump Belt - If the washer won't drain the pump belt might have broken or might have worn out. Check the belt and replace if it shows signs of excessive wear.
  • Drain Pump - If the washer won't drain water the drain pump might be defective. It's also common for a small sock or other article of clothing to get caught in the drain pump or in the drain hose. Check both for an obstruction before replacing the pump.
  • Clogged Pump or Hose - If the washer won't drain there might be a clogged pump or hose. It's common for small socks or other small clothing items to get into the water drain system and clog the hose leading to the pump or the pump itself. Remove the hoses from the pump in order to remove the article of clothing. Keep in mind that any water in the washer will pour out of the hoses when removed.
