Perming Your Hair at Home?

I've gotten perms for about 4 years now. My hairdresser usually uses a white (9/16 inch) rod, which produces nice curls. I feel comfortable giving myself a perm, so I ordered white rods online from Sally's beauty salon. I decided I would practice rolling my hair with the perm rods before I applied the solution, but once my hair dried and I took the rods out my hair was so curly it was like a had a little white girl afro! Will my hair turn out this curly once the perm solution is applied? Or will it look like it normally does when I get it done in a salon?

it is possible that it will turn back, but it is possible that either the mix was defective or you overdid it in regards to time or strength.

Perm mixes generally are alkaline and mess with the hair cuticle. It is this action that changes the curl pattern of your hair. Too much and you can cause real damage.

It will be as curly even before you apply the saloution.

You have not started the perm yet and were just testing the rods. It sounds like you wet your hair, put the rods in, allowed your hair to dry and took the rods out. This is normal when you are curling hair like you have done and it will make a lot of really tight curls in your hair. What I would suggest you try is to put in the rods, leave them until the hair is almost dry and take them out. Look at this result first.

When I was small I had to give my grandma a lot of home perms growing up. Here is what I learned. After rolling the hair and putting on the solution I would set a timer for 10 minutes. I would take one of the rollers and unroll the roller to see how wavy the hair was. If it was like my grandma liked it I would continue on with the perm. If it was not wavy enough I would put it back in and wait 5 more minutes.

The time you leave in the solution will determine how curly your hair is. You might want to ask a friend of yours to help you do this or just wait a few more weeks and let your hair dresser do this for you if you are afraid that your hair will be too curly when done.

No it wont be that curly. If your hair dresser has always used the white rods 9/16 you have nothing to worry about. The solution you put on the hair first when getting a perm is the relaxer, it takes all curls .waves ect. Out of the hair. The next solution is the neutralizer.

This is what locks in the curl. Also make sure you dont keep the neutralizer in over 5 minutes, because this will burn your hair. Good luck
I'm sure your hair is going to look gorgeous.
