You can, but I would not for a variety of reasons, including that if your mix is even the tiniest bit off, it could cause a fire.

The healthiest alternative is a simple natural potpourri like these:

These can be made with items from your panty and/or garden.

Fires are caused by the oils getting too hot! Sorry if I wasn't clear.

This is a bettery operated mister and the essential oils would be
maybe 6 to 10 drops in water. Is this still a fire hazard?

It is the oil heating that can cause issues, not necessarily how it is heated.

I have two links (below)...one has flash points and since there is probably no easy way to get a thermometer into the thing to measure temperature, it may be hard to tell what temperature the mixture gets to. I am just very paranoid about oils and heat causing flames.

Even though this question is over 1 1/2 years old I think something needs to be clarified, since anyone searching for an answer to this question would find this post. Pghgirl40, the question is specifically about the Airwick essential mist diffuser and nothing else. Please see my answer to Lindadann

The difusers don't use heat, the are piezo electric. They atomize the oil mixture, not heat it.

I change the fragrance from a regular Air Wick and put it into the bottle of the essential mist, and it works great no issues no fire issues I sit there and watch it push out the smoke without any issues. Save you around $3.50 a bottle by doing it this way just Gotta be careful taking the tops off the bottles.

I use scented oils from a standard air wick device and put it into the essential bottles. Essentials Mist container works great no issues and a lot cheaper to do it this way.

Even though this question is over 1 1/2 years old I think something needs to be clarified, since anyone searching for an answer to this question would find this post. Lindadann, yes you can put a mix of water with 8-10 drops of your favorite oil right into the Airwick essential mist diffuser's scent bottle, once it's empty. To Pghgirl40, the question is specifically about the Airwick essential mist diffuser and nothing else. This diffuser does NOT get hot.

Additionally it IS an essential oil diffuser. It comes with an essential oil mix and they sell refills with essential oils, therefore how did you deduce that you cannot refill it with an essential oil and water mix? I think you just came on here to promote yourself. Apparently you did not read the question or do any research. Your flashpoints link is great to remember if I ever stick essential oils in the oven.

Hi hisbonics, I stand corrected on that this is a diffuser that the original poster asked about, and I answered based on personal experience with a plug in. I agree I was wrong here and I apologize.

This was a while back so I can't tell you exactly what I was thinking when I responded or why I read it wrong. Yes, legacy information on the internet needs to be corrected.

I do know when I see any posts about essential oils and altering them, I have a knee jerk reaction because I had a defective plug with oils in it catch on fire and it spread quickly to drapes in my apartment. Thank God I was there and got it out before it killed us all. That experience made me quite sensitive to the topic of oils and things that get plugged in in general..

I am promoting nothing. The responders on this site, at least not me, aren't promoting anything either. We are a chat board to help people learn from our own experiences from every day situations.

Based on my experience, I always like to give people as much information as possible to make informed and safe decisions. I just gave the wrong research in the original post. This is just one of many articles I share when people talk to me about essential oils and their potential dangers:

My goal with my answers is to help people make informed decisions about their world. Both sides are critical to that so thanks for correcting this and sharing your experiences. That is what makes the world go round!

Hi Pghgirl40, I saved your links because you do have some very valuable information. So sorry you went through that! I actually recently bought some ceramic plug ins that you put oils on the top and due to your information I decided to take them down. They were really pretty but too dangerous! I did add oils to the diffuser, without water as another poster recommended, and it works fine. I also only turn it on when we around. Thank you for your reply!

Safety first, hisbonics! Happy to have helped! There are lots of ways to have scents safely--call me old fashioned, but baskets of home made potpourri work, as long as you do not have pets or small children who could get into them and potentially ingest them! Windows open (if you can do so safely) is also great to "refresh" a room!

What is the oil to water ratio when mixing my own fragrance for use in the unit?

June 29, 20200 found this helpful

Yes, you can, but when you mix water with oil, oil being light in weight floats on water. So oil evaporates early than water. Later on there is no fragrance of oil. You can only refill oil.

Hello ashok7447,
In my previous reply I said I used oils without water in the Air Wick Essential Oils Mist device but that is very costly. After that I decided to really look into it and I realized that all of the diffusers, including those in my home, require water and then just a few drops of oil to be diffused. The reason being that the "mist" is created through ultrasonic vibrations, the water is broken down into micro-particles which allows the essential oil to attach to it and be transmitted into the air.

All diffusers work this way. You only need to add just a few drops of essential oil to a diffuser filled with water. This is what I was talking about when responding to the original question. Thank you.

About the water used in every discussion thread, isnt the actual water always used with essential oils be Distilled or can u use tap, well, & even county/city water cuz i know our city water smells like straight bleach which is why i drink bottled but it begs the question kinda since we all r talking about homemade diffusing & i read this someplace b4 cant recall.

You can purchase essential diffusion scented oils and refill the airwlck bottle with 10 drops of your oil and fill it up with water and it will work the same. I tried it and it works great. I use freesia scent.

I'm glad someone came upon the post from long ago and updated and updated with useful info! It's not often you see that happen. At least in my experience.
Of course I stumbled on this because I love my airwick essential diffuser but I actually didn't like ANY of the fragrances they sell for it. The one I kinda could stand my boyfriend found obnoxious.
I prefer cranberry or pomegranate scents. I don't often find them outside of Christmas and then I'll love one and they don't make the scent again the next season. I actually bought my walmart out of, I think it was called, Sugarplum dreams and sure enough they didn't have it the next year.
Between this and a video I found for the airwick plug-in, that I use in the kitchen, I should be able to set myself up with a scent I like and keep having it. The plug-in actually using heat the flashpoints link will come in handy as well. I can finally stop having to use wax melts that, between the kids and cats, seem to always end up knocked over.

Updating this old thread with a factual, real-life answer. Yes. You can. Im doing it myself and just refilled them again today. I use essential oils (8-10 drops) and the Fille the rest with water. Works fine. Only downside is the old scent takes a bit to work its way out of the stem. No issues. No fires. No concerns.

How do you get the old bottle opened and the resealed so it works correctly

July 18, 20211 found this helpful

i used a small knife to pry off top.

I just bought one of these and want to use it to scent my attic with peppermint oil to keep the wasps away. I noticed there is a wick in the top of the fragrance bottle that came with the diffuser. If I refill the bottle with water and a few drops of oil, can I reuse the wick?

July 14, 20221 found this helpful

There is little info on reusing wicks, homemade wicks, dyi wicks. Of course the giant amazon shwing logo all over the net has some you can buy but nobody I know buys. Good luck with the web site forum idea, some great information if one can find it quickly.

Top Regards,
