Should I paint the wooden cabinets in my kitchen to match my walls or a little darker than my walls? I am using Benjamin Moore, Elmira white, it looks like a light gray.

I would not do the same shade. I would go either 3 shades darker or lighter.

I have a red faux brick half wall and backsplash. The bottom half of wall is pine and the floors are a dark walnut. I'm painting my kitchen cabinets and was wondering what color to use and what type/color of countertop would work?

White is always safe, or you could be bold and do an accent wall the same shade as the brick.

You could have a brown granite-look countertop with red in it.

I would match the wall paint if at all possible. It will make it look bigger and you can avoid adding another color to the mix.

Gray with perhaps an accent in the second color in the counters.

I would do a shade of turquoise or a lime green for a brighter kitchen. More masculine? Do gray or a brick red. Have fun.

Bring the sunshine in! May be just me, but I would finish bringing in "spring colors", if that is what your green is. Sky blue cabinet bases with banana cream pie yellow doors would be really pretty.

And, any seasonal accents (in colors either bold or pastel) would change things up as you want!

You also have to look at the countertop and floor so that it all coordinates. You could do black, brown or a cherry look if you want a darker cabinet. Or,go with a cream or off white, whichever fits with the green tiles. White will be harder to keep clean. Here's a good link on painting cabinets:

I want to redecorate my kitchen using paint. I have a hunter green counter. The cabinets are currently white with white/brass hardware. The floor is also hunter green vinyl tile. I want to replace the floor and paint the cabinets and walls. The counter must stay. The room borders the living dining area which is half charcoal floral wallpaper and painted jade/spruce green. I sent a photo of the ajoining wall colors. It came out a little darker than it actually is. All suggestions are welcome.

Hi Sam, are you sure that you want to go through all the work of painting your cabinets? I recently painted all of my kitchen cabinets and it was a lot of work; not to mention the time that my kitchen was all torn apart! Maybe if you just paint the walls you might actually like your white cabinetry better; I like white cabinets because it makes a kitchen look so bright and clean.

You didn't really mention what colors you like, if you like a more neutral pallette or something more dramatic. I think that Taupe is a very nice color to go with the hunter green counter top; and it would look nice with white cabinetry too. Peach, or a light blush color, would look nice with the green counter. My living room colors are hunter, taupe, and burgundy; would you do something so daring as painting your walls burgundy?! It may look very nice, if you have a lot of light in your kitchen, and if you kept your white cabinets to lighten it up!

What kind of floor are you looking to replace the linoleum with? I had a laminate floor at my last house and did not like it at all! This house, I have carpet in the kitchen, and that is even worse! Are you thinking tile, or linoleum? There are so many choices out there, it will be a tough decision for you to make.

Good luck with your redecorating, and make sure to share pictures!

Hi! I would strip the white paint from the cabinets and go with a stain or a shade of brown paint. I would paint the walls a tan, taupe, apricot, pale yellow,, salmon, or a shade of gold--somewhere in that color range.

You need to consider your flooring colour first. If it is a very neutral brown flooring, you have a wide latitude, and can likely choose any colour you like. If it is an orangy tone to the wood, you will have to consider blues or greys for example, not reddish or yellow tones. The colour of the wall that is already papered is also a consideration. Is it a neutral colour, or is it definite colour? It is difficult to help you with suggestions when we can't see the space.

If all of the other existing things -- furniture, flooring, wall units, and papered wall are very neutral you can pretty much choose whatever colour you like. Look in magazines for rooms that have decor you like, and go from there. Another idea is to visit new show homes in your area that are decorated by professionals and see what the trends are.

I have a dated kitchen and I want to paint the cupboards. My counters are cream and the backsplash is light green tile. I want to put in a new laminate floor that looks like a medium wood color.

I am not sure what color to paint cupboards and what type of paint to use.

First off I would use an enamel based paint for your cupboards. This way when they get greasy or dirty you can easily wash them.

You might want to stick with the same color combination as your counter tops for your cupboards. You can use a cream color on the door and a trim of green around the door panels.

You could also use a light yellow trim around the door and a cream color on the panels.

If you are putting in a medium colored wood floor you could use a light brown paint on your cupboards this would blend in the floor with the rest of your kitchen.

If you like the colour, I do not see why not. The walls and countertop are neutral, so just about anything will go with it. Will you get curtains, perhaps, in a print with some turquoise and brown and beige in them to tie the things together?

What color is the floor and woodwork in the room; also dinette set
Does the room have a lot of natural light? Is the room small or large sized?

If the room is small with few windows, then white would look nice or some other light color which compliments the walls. IF the room is large and has a lot of windows, then you can go with something darker perhaps the darker color of the walls, but then I do not know if this will interfere with my previous questions addressed. Offer a bit more info please.

Think I'd go for yellow and a red rug or blinds as a contrast. Grey would be a bit too neutral for me. You don't tell us the colour of the walls though, and if it's a small kitchen or large. Makes a difference.

Feng shui says to use touches of red. I'd paint the yellow walls white but you might consider a warm white and do the cupboards in the same. That will make your countertop pop.

The "new" neutral colours work well with reds, the new neutrals are greys, a nice shade of grey would go very well with red. Try to get a really good picture of the colour with a digital camera and take it to the paint store with you to find a shade that compliments the red. My living room is a burgundy red and a soft grey. Looks great and if you don't like greys try a cream not a pinkish cream, but a brownish cream, really light, but some look pink and some look brown, ask if your paint store gives out sample pots of paint. Ours does, costs $3.50 for a pot worth it to get the right colour and not end up with a room you don't like!

You could really go with any color. I would look at the countertop and any tile too and coordinate it all. Try a warm light brown or add some contrast with a subtle burgungy.

I am trying to gut the kitchen but keep the flooring. What is a good cabinet style and color (countertops too) for a kitchen with white gloss tile (with a little black whispery accent color)? There is also a dark brown brick fireplace next to the kitchen.

Our ideas are using a white or light grey glossy modern cabinet style with a blackish speckled countertop. Or a dark color butcher block countertop with white painted cabinets. IDK, just trying to brainstorm some ideas.

Or should we paint the brick fireplace?

Answer this Question

January 6, 2014

I have a very small kitchen, with dark cupboards that I would like to paint. The appliances are almond and the flooring is lino that looks like tile that I guess would be a off white to beige. The countertop is butcher block in appearance. On one end is a window and sink then cupboards on both sides along with the appliances and then the end wall has a large opening in it to open it up.

It had just a countertop there, but I would like to put a cupboard of some sort that is not permanent. Just so there is more cupboard room for a family. We had lots as there is just the two of us.

Ideally we would pull it all out and start over, but we are moving and would just like it to look more updated. I would really appreciate some advice on colours as I am horrible at picking colours, but enjoy doing the work. Thank you.
