I just asked my vet the best way to prevent ear mites in my beagle puppy (they have a tendency to suffer with them more than other breeds) he recommended cleaning her ears out once a week with a solution of 1/2 water and 1/2 hydrogen peroxide. I purchased an inexpensive pointed tip plastic bottle at the dollar store (the kind you would use for ketchup, etc.) and I make a mix based on the vets directions. Using the bottle to fill the ear with the solution, I then massage the base of the ear for a few seconds and then allow her to "shake" the fluid out of her ears. The vet said this would keep her ears free of debris that attracts the mites and allows them a breeding ground in the ear. I also do this on my Golden Retriever and have since had happy ear mite free puppies!

I asked my vet the same question. She said it would be very painful to use alcohol because the ear mites bite and when the alcohol comes in contact with the spot that was bitten, it will burn a lot. Try putting alcohol on a cut on your finger and you will find out what it would be like.

Our vet told us years ago to use a little boric acid powder. Put a pinch or more, depending on the size of the dog, into the ear and close the flap over the ear and massage the ear for several seconds.

It works beautifully, and is painless to the animal.

No, you need to go to the vet (no appointment needed) and tell the receptionist you need ear mite med. Don't ask "what is this or this...". You'll be asking her to diagnois and she can't do that. Ask for med for a specific problem. Mitox used to be the preferred product but I think it's been taken off the market (probably because it worked so well!) but there are other things just as good. Alcohol, no.

I would use this remedy using Olive Oil instead of the almond oil, unless you just happen to have the almond oil until you can get to the vet.

www.healthynewage.com's remedy is as follows:

Step 1: Make a mixture of 1/2 ounce of almond or olive oil and 400 IU vitamin E in a dropper bottle. Warm to body temperature and put about 1/2 dropper full in the ear, massaging the ear canal well for a minute or so. Let your pet shake its head and then gently clean out the opening with cotton swabs. Q-tip type applicators many times compact material already in the ear canal. Apply the oil every other day for six days. Then let the ears rest for 3 days. (The oil mixture will smother many of the mites and start a healing process.)

I am not sure how many capsules 400 iu is but it would be easy to do the math.

Also there is a lot of home remedies to use to comfort the cat before the vet appointment which I would recommend. Sometimes it is faster to use the vets medicine. Earthclinic.com has a pets tab and you can look up ailments and see what others have experienced and put your own experiences there.

No it will not work and will harm the animals ears. Order some "Happy Jack" ear mite medicine and use it. It is not costly if it was then I wouldn't have been able to buy it myself. You can also purchase it at a Farm Supply if you have one (we don't). Keep us informed on what you do!

It most likely would kill the ear mites, but will also make ears sore. I use olive oil with drop of tea tree oil to kill mites. Once a day for 3 days.
