Bolens Riding Mower Won't Start?

April 4, 2017

I have a Bolens riding lawn mower that has been sitting for a while. I pulled the old gas out and recharged the battery. For some reason the engine will not turn over.

It tries to, but doesn't seem to have the power to go all the way over. Any suggestions?

Not quite sure what model or type you have but here are some feedback from some who own a Bolens Riding Mower.

They said issue could be anywhere from:
- Weak battery
- Loose wire connection
- Solenoid
- Spark Plugs
- And so forth

I have a 2005 Bolens 15.5 mower. I have replaced the carburetor and the spark plug. I have checked the fuel lines going into the carburetor. It tries to start and kills itself.

YOu may actually want to test the starter itself. There are many things, possibly involving the battery, or simply involving the starter itself, that is causing this.

You need a let for the flywheel that's why it turns and no crank most likely. Hope that helps you.

Check spark plugs, starter, battery, ! These 3 items can keep your lawn mower from turning over!

Check spark plugs clean them, check for a dirty air filter, clean or replace.Tap the side of the carburater help the flow of gas.If this does not help you may need to change the fuel filter.

If this is an issue the starter could be the problem. Did you replace the solenoids when you replaced the battery? These normally will need replacing in older mowers and at times the starter will need to be replaced.

I would check the power the battery is sending to the solenoids and see if you can use a screwdriver to jump start the mower.

Sometimes after 'setting' up for a while gas could be corrupted with sludge if it was not drained or an additive added and it will clog up your carburetor.
You might want to try using Starting engine fluid as a quick check.
Available at all auto parts stores and most big box stores.

www.homedepot.com/.../204802514

There are numerous things to check but best to try each one in order to see if the problem is corrected before moving on to something else.

Most mowers will be about the same when troubleshooting so you might want to check some of the online sources to see what to try.

Usually the first things to check is air filter and spark plug. You probably need new ones anyway.

I have a 2005 Bolens 38" twin blade riding mower. It was running and I went to engage the blades and the pulleys were seized. The mower stalled as expected. I took the deck out and changed the blade spindles, blades, etc. I have a full charge on my battery and checked both the PTO switch and the park brake switch, seat switch, and solenoid, all have continuity, but I have no power at all.

The fuse 20amp fuse to the ignition is good as well as the power going to the starter. Any ideas?

My Bolens riding mower won't start. It has spark. I can squirt gas into the cylinder, screw the plug in, and it still won't start. It does have plenty of compression.

I have a 2003 Bolens riding mower, model #13AN683G163 which will not start. This began over a year ago, when I thought it was the battery. I replaced the battery and the mower started, but the battery would drain and have to be charged to be used again.

This year, it would not start even after charging. I replaced the solenoid, the spark plug, and the gas and air filters. The fuse under the seat is OK, and the gasoline is new. I have cleaned and lubricated what I believe is the starter, which is on the side of the engine, and often the mower does start.

Now, however, when I turn on the key, the flywheel turns a little, but the mower does not start. I have checked schematics online and even called Bolens, but I cannot find a starter, and Bolens has told me that there is no part called the starter. Any ideas?

Sounds like your push rods are not adjusted right.

Bolens Co. just makes the lawnmower not the engine Briggs & Stratton does. Try to get ahold of a parts store and get the serial number off the engine and send it in to the parts store and get the starter that goes to the engine.

My Bolens MTD 13.5 Briggs and Stratton engine starts, but floods out after about 2 minutes. I take it off choke after starting, but it floods out. I replaced the fuel filter, hoses, battery, and spark plug, and it has fresh fuel as well. It ran OK a week prior so I'm not sure what happened. It is a 2 year old machine BTW. Do I need to clean the carb, or replace? Thanks.

I would clean the carburetor on the mower. You are getting too much gas to the engine and the carburetor isn't allowing the gas to flow through. There has to be a blockage in there. You could have some dirt or sludge in there that is causing this problem.

The only online fuse is the 20amp fuse under the seat.

I just recently picked up an old Bolens lawn tractor. It has an Onan motor in it. My question is why won't it start. I have a new coil, new wires, and new spark plugs, but no spark at the spark plugs. What else should I be checking?

Thanks.

There is a safety switch under the seat which prevents starting unless someone is sitting on the seat. It might be disabled. Disconnect it and re-connect it.

I have a 38" cut Bolens riding mower with 15.5 hp that does nothing. I replaced the battery, solenoid, carb, fuel lines and filter, air filter, spark plug, and the 20amp fuse. All this and I get not a sound or a movement when I turn the key.

However I can bridge the solenoid and jump it. Any idea on what's going on? I am not sure if I need a new ignition or a starter or something else?

I have a Bolens 13.5 HP lawn tractor with B&S engine. When trying to start it, all I am getting is a clicking sound; similar to a car with a low battery.

I have charged the battery to a full 12 volts, but no luck, still clicking. The tractor is only 3 years old. Any suggestions for what I can do? Thanks.

I changed the deck belt on my Bolens yard tractor and now the mower will not crank. Sometimes I get a clicking sound and others I get the growl as the motor tries to spin. It doesn't seem to get enough speed to turn completely over.

I took the belt off, charged the battery fully and it cranked. I replaced the belt and it does the same thing, clicks or growls as the motor tries to turn over, but it never fully starts.

One of the belt pulley is stuck or it is too tight to spin. It sounds like your belt is stuck and not spinning freely. You'll need to check the belt pulleys and turn them with your hand.

Make sure they spin freely and they move with the belt attached. If not, change the pulley out.

Check your oil. It would act like that if it was over heated from lack of oil.
