Asking My Mom to Let Me Shave?

I'm turning 13 in a couple of months and am in the 7th grade. In school all my friends are making fun of my legs and they're very hairy. I get embarrassed in school about it. I mentioned to my mom that my legs are hairy, but she just ignores me. My brother tells me too that they are hairy and I should ask my mom to let me shave, but I just don't know the way to ask her. Any advice?

Some mothers who are afraid of their daughters cutting themselves will agree to a dipilatory.

I, too, needed to shave my legs at 13, but my mom kept putting me off. So, I did what all the girls did - waited for mom to leave the house and used my dad's razor and shaving cream.

That was 50 years ago. I think it's still being done like that today.

It is tough to be in this position! We all want to feel like we fit in.

Is it possible for you just to quietly excuse yourself when these very rude people comment on your legs OR better yet, join in and make fun of yourself....that will really wonk them out!!!

Quite honestly, this conversation is is not for polite company and these people are just being cheeky and quite unladylike or gentleman like. RUDE!!!

When you do start to shave I encourage you not to follow in their suit and keep private matters private! Rise above!!

As for your wanting to shave, your mom probably may just be busy so maybe a quick reminder would jog her memory. Be sure find a quiet time and not when she is juggling a million things.

I wish I had waited as it is a life time of work to shave your legs (I HATE IT WITH A PASSION), but I get it that you want to fit in and society is cruel with the stereotype of what is beautiful. You are beautiful for you. With or without hair! Always remember that!!

There is light at the end of the tunnel. I shaved under my arms every day from the time I was 13. Skipping a day was uncomfortable. Then, a few years back, I realized there wasn't much hair under my arms anymore, and what was there was so clear and silky that the razor just glided over them.

Same with my legs. I started shaving when I was 12, but I stopped shaving above the knees in my 20s, because I really didn't have any hair to shave. For a while, I shaved my lower legs every day, but that's pretty much gone away, too. I'll probably shave more since it's shorts time now, but during the winter I can get away with once a month or longer. I'm blonde, so my leg hair is nearly clear.

When I do shave, I use hair conditioner as shaving cream right before I jump in the shower. Because of a knee replacement scar on one leg and a melanoma scar on the other, I never wear skirts anymore.

I know we were all told the old wives' tales about shaving making your hair grow faster, but it doesn't. The root of the hair is not affected by how much we cut off above the top layer of skin. Shaving might make our legs more prickly, but the hair grows at its own rate.
