  • 3 large onions, sliced
  • 1 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic salt
  • 1/8 tsp. pepper
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup (2 oz) shredded American Cheese
  • 2 medium potatoes peeled and sliced thinly
  • 1/4 cup (1 oz) shredded American Cheese

In large saucepan cook onion in the butter using medium heat. Stir occasionally. Cook until tender, about 8 minutes. Stir the flour, garlic salt, and pepper into the cooked onion. Add milk all at once. Cook and stir until mixture thickens and is bubbly. Add 1/2 cup of cheese stirring until cheese has melted. Remove from heat. Place half of the sliced potatoes in a greased 1 1/2 quart casserole. Cover with half of the sauce. Repeat layers.

Bake covered in 350 degree F. oven for 35 minutes. Uncover casserole and bake 40 -45 minutes longer or until potatoes are tender.

Sprinkle with 1/4 cup cheese. Let stand for 5 minutes. Makes 4 servings.

Peel onions; cut a thin slice from tops, and slash cut surfaces of onions with a shallow x. Place onions in a 12 x 8 x 2 inch baking dish.

Combine sugar and remaining ingredients, stirring until sugar dissolves; pour over onions.

Is there any special way to prepare the onions? Are they chopped, whole, cored, peeled, etc?
